The families no one brings prasad to
BMC Hospitals and Cancer Care Center treat patients from every corner of the country. Families arrive with a bag, a blanket and whatever money they have - and every rupee of it goes to medicines, tests and blood. Food becomes the first thing they give up.
They sleep where they wait
Caregivers spend 10-40 days on corridor floors and footpaths, never leaving in case they are called.
They skip meals to save for treatment
Many eat once a day. Some survive on tea. Hunger quietly becomes part of the illness.
They are the patient's strength
A fed caregiver can hold a hand, chase a report, donate blood. Feeding them heals two people at once.

When the warrior Karna died, his soul was offered gold and gems as food in the celestial realm. Indra explained: "You donated gold all your life - but never food to your ancestors." Karna was allowed to return to Earth for 16 days to offer food. That 16-day period is Pitru Paksha.
