When Bappa arrives, let the first aarti be a warm plate of food.
In our tradition, annadaan is held among the highest forms of seva — because feeding someone asks nothing in return. This festival, we are cooking for 3,500 children in South Mumbai’s BMC schools, and for the families who cannot come home to celebrate: nurses on night duty, motormen, sanitation crews, police constables and emergency staff who keep the city breathing while the dhol plays outside.

A festival is a table where
nobody is missing
Ganesh Chaturthi is the sound of home — the modaks, the crowded kitchen, the aarti thali passed hand to hand. But across Mumbai, thousands spend these ten days away from that table because someone has to stay on duty, and thousands of children sit through the school day on a half-empty stomach.
Akshaya Chaitanya has served over 5 crore meals from hygienic central kitchens across the city. This year our Ganesh Chaturthi seva is focused and measurable: hot, balanced lunches for 3,500 children in South Mumbai BMC schools, from primary through secondary, for one complete academic year.
You cannot be everywhere Bappa is welcomed. But your daan can be on 3,500 plates, every school day, for a year.
While Bappa arrives at every home, a child in a BMC school is still waiting for the first meal of the day
South Mumbai’s BMC schools serve some of the city’s most economically vulnerable families. For many of these children, the day begins early — long commutes on crowded buses and trains, a kitchen that may already be empty, and a classroom where it is hard to concentrate when hunger is the loudest thought.
A dependable school meal changes the entire equation. It is the reason a child stays in school instead of being pulled into informal work. It is the difference between a distracted morning and a child who can follow a lesson, play at recess, and walk home with enough energy left for homework. It is dignity: the same hot plate as every other child, regardless of what their parents managed to earn that week.
Ganesh Chaturthi reminds us that no celebration feels complete while someone at the table is hungry. This seva does not end with the festival. It stays for 240 school days — a full academic year of warmth, nutrition, and the quiet promise that a child’s education will not be interrupted by an empty stomach.
Children arrive hungry
Long commutes and uncertain mornings mean many children sit through the first periods without having eaten.
Learning needs fuel
A nutritious midday meal improves attention, attendance, and the ability to keep up with classmates.
Equal opportunity on one plate
The same balanced lunch for every child protects dignity and eases the daily strain on families.
The arithmetic of a full stomach
Nothing here is rounded up for effect. This is the real cost of cooking, packing and delivering one nutritious meal at scale.

Why a school meal changes
everything
A guaranteed midday meal is one of the strongest reasons families keep sending children to school instead of to work.
Hunger shows up as restlessness and poor concentration. A fed child can actually absorb the lesson in front of them.
Balanced portions of carbohydrates, protein and vegetables help address anaemia and stunting in the years that matter most.
One assured meal a day eases the daily budget of families surviving on informal, uncertain wages.
