Raksha Bandhan is the festival of protection — the promise a brother makes to his sister, sealed with a thread and honoured with love. But protection is not only a family bond. True Raksha means ensuring that no girl goes hungry, no child is left without nourishment, and no sister — near or far, known or unknown — faces the world without care. This Raksha Bandhan 2026, Akshaya Chaitanya invites you to extend your thread of protection to Mumbai's most vulnerable girls and children through daan on Raksha Bandhan and Anna Daan on Rakshabandhan.

About Raksha Bandhan: Why This Festival Is Celebrated

Raksha Bandhan 2026 Date: Friday, August 28, 2026 (Shravana Purnima — the full moon of the Shravan month)

Raksha Bandhan (literally "the bond of protection") is celebrated on the full moon day of the Hindu month of Shravan. A sister ties a sacred thread — the Rakhi — on her brother's wrist, symbolising her love and her prayer for his long life. The brother, in turn, pledges to protect and care for her throughout his life.

The festival's roots go deep into Hindu mythology and history:

  • Draupadi and Krishna: When Lord Krishna cut his finger, Draupadi tore a piece of her saree to bandage his wound. Krishna, moved by her gesture, promised to protect her always — a promise he fulfilled at Draupadi's Vastraharan.
  • Indra and Sachi: In the Bhagavat Purana, Goddess Sachi tied a thread on Lord Indra's wrist before a great battle, which he won with her blessings.
  • Historical tradition: Queen Karnavati of Mewar sent a Rakhi to Mughal Emperor Humayun seeking protection — cementing the festival as a symbol of cross-community protection and human solidarity.

Raksha Bandhan is not just about siblings — it is about the universal covenant to protect the most vulnerable. It falls during Shravan Maas, making charitable giving during this period doubly auspicious.

Why Donate on Raksha Bandhan? The Deeper Promise of Rakhi

1. Rakhi is a promise of protection — extend it to those who have none Millions of underprivileged girls in Mumbai do not have a brother's rakhi to count on. On this day of protection, your donation on Rakshabandhan becomes their shield — in the form of a meal, a day of school, a moment of dignity.

2. Daan in Shravan Maas carries 100x merit Raksha Bandhan falls during Shravan, the most auspicious month for charity. According to the Shiva Purana, daan given in Shravan returns to the donor a hundredfold in spiritual merit. Your daan on Rakshabandhan is magnified by the holiness of the month itself.

3. Anna Daan honours the spirit of Rakhi On Raksha Bandhan, families feast together. Your Anna Daan on Rakshabandhan ensures that children in Mumbai's government schools and hospitals also have a meal to celebrate with — that no one is left outside the circle of abundance this festival creates.

4. Feeding a girl is the deepest form of protection In Indian tradition, nourishing a girl child is considered among the most meritorious acts. On the very day we celebrate the protection of sisters, feeding an underprivileged girl through Annadaan is the truest Rakhi gift.

What Is Anna Daan on Rakshabandhan?

Anna Daan means the gift of food — "Anna" (food) + "Daan" (donation). It is called "Param Daan" — the supreme gift — in Hindu scriptures, because food sustains life itself.

When you donate on Raksha Bandhan with Akshaya Chaitanya, your Anna Daan provides:

  • Hot, nutritious breakfasts for girls and boys in Mumbai municipal schools (Bal Shiksha Ahara)
  • Full meals for children recovering in government hospitals (Paushtik Ahara)
  • Daily sustenance for homeless, widowed, and marginalised women in Mumbai's slums (Swasthya Ahara)
