FOOD RELIEF SERVICES IN INDIA

Hunger is a feeling of emptiness, desperation, and solitude in addition to a physical need.
Throughout India, the food crisis was particularly severe in the 1950s and 1960s. The severity of
India’s food crisis has diminished as a result of the implementation of innovative agricultural
techniques. However, due to Indian agriculture’s continued reliance on weather, the production
of food grains fluctuates sharply with changes in weather. As a result, even in more recent
years, the nation still needed to import some food grains from abroad. India has not yet attained
the level of food grain self-sufficiency. Due to this it is in need of daily feeding programs. This
ever-increasing size of the population is responsible for the persisting food problem in the
country. Mumbai, the nation’s financial center, continues to experience hunger, famine, and
malnutrition and still even after so many years we are fighting hunger in Mumbai.

The Food Relief program strives to give affordable access to food supplies throughout India. Organizations are funded to ensure food supplies are available for daily feeding program for people in need throughout India by receiving and redistributing foods to community organizations or other distribution centers where the food donation is required; sourcing and transporting essential foods where food for child is insufficient; leading the development of local partnerships to improve access and distribution, especially in rural and remote areas.
Akshaya Chaitanya runs 3 such food relief programs in India via its daily feeding program by distributing meals to the low-income and marginalized element of society, which includes daily wage workers, migrant laborers, construction site workers, and needy individuals at old age homes and night shelters.

The issue of fighting hunger in Mumbai was recognized by various NGOs in Mumbai and one
such NGO is Akshaya Chaitanya. With the aim of ensuring food security for every vulnerable in
India, the NGO is cooking food to donate to those in need of one good meal in a day. As an
organization, they have always wanted to eradicate the problem of hunger in the most
sustainable and scalable way. The organization has various food relief programs like
(i)Swasthya Ahara-It is a government hospital feeding program that provides limitless free,
wholesome lunches every day to the underprivileged in Mumbai government hospitals while
reducing the cost of food and assuring food safety. (ii)The Paushtik Ahara is in association with
meals-on-wheels initiative where the organization supports education with nutrition by giving
free lunch to impoverished youngsters every day. (iii)The Bal Shiksha Ahara programme is the
municipal school breakfast program, ensuring that students have a healthy start to the day and
a day full of appropriate instruction.

Their goal is to provide food for children who are hungry but have a strong desire to learn and
succeed. We provide them with one nutritious meal a day so they have the energy and
inspiration to seek an education in order to have a better future. We want to make it easier for
people to donate food through us so the donated food can reach a lot of people. It is our goal to
make people aware that if we care-we can share.

Apart from NGOs in Mumbai, many people at their individual level also conduct food relief
programs in India. Especially during coved a lot of people started daily feeding programs to
ensure that the migrant population is not starving due to lack of work. So many people find
places where they can give food to donate to the hungry and needy stomach to make a positive
impact in the society by ensuring food security. This not only gives people a chance to serve the
society but also give back in their capacity.

The hunger is visible in the streets of Mumbai, when we see children begging at the signals.
Akshaya Chaitanya, strives to end hunger in the city by distributing food for child who struggle
for meals, and also relatives of patients at the Government hospitals. It is an initiative of a very
reputed organization HKM foundation who have dedicated selfless efforts towards the cause of
fighting hunger in Mumbai. The milestone of feeding 11,000+ people in Mumbai with hot,
nutritious meals everyday is worth applause and very few NGO in Mumbai work at such a scale.

Akshaya Patra is another such organization of repute that has been working since more than a
decade to conduct food relief programs throughout India. Their work in the society is
commendable and one of the most noteworthy names when it comes to food donation in India.
There is so much to learn from so many organizations, that we can only hope to grow and
evolve to be able to fight hunger in Mumbai by conducting successful feeding programs.
