Charity begins at Home City: Mumbai

On 4th March 2022, Shri. Aaditya Thackeray and Smt. Kishori Pednekar inaugurated the centralised community kitchen and officially launched the Bal Shiksha Ahara feeding initiative run by Akshaya Chaitanya – an NGO in Mumbai.

Severe acute malnutrition among children is defined as very low weight for height, or a mid-
upper arm circumference of less than 115 millimetres, or by the presence of nutritional
oedema, according to a document by the National Rural Health Mission.

Without access to nutritious food, vulnerable populations have lowered immunity levels, which makes them susceptible to sickness. Thus, access to nutritious food is a form of preventive medicine in itself.

Hunger, rising debt and a slow slide in poverty seems to be the fate of many slum dwellers in Mumbai.

Akshaya Chaitanya is one of the best NGO in Mumbai addressing the hunger of family members of patients from low-income backgrounds in Mumbai's government hospitals, slums and municipal schools by providing nutritious food free of cost. Through their hospital feeding service, the organisation cooks food in their 8,000 sq. ft Byculla kitchen that caters to marginalised poor communities and donates food to the needy.

When you donate to charity, you not only impact the life of the receiver, you also bring about a shift in the society. Akshaya Chaitanya works relentlessly to ensure that nobody in the city of Mumbai goes to bed with an empty stomach. Children especially should not be the victims of Hunger, and to fight that, Akshaya Chaitanya runs two feeding initiatives: Bal Shiksha Ahara and Paushtik Ahara to secure the children with food so they can make most of the opportunities available.

For achieving ZERO classroom hunger, we started feeding children across municipal schools. Mrs. Hazra is a teacher at ENS Patanwala Marg school, Byculla, who shares the impact of the food donations in video below:
